(More) Changes at The World

Disney has just announced:

The Studio Backlot Tour at DHS will be closing as of September 27th in the name of "future enhancements".

Disney's Hollywood Studios Backlot Tour Closing

Ooooh. I am ever so hopeful that a new Cars Land is in the works!!!
It’s all in the name of progress, or as a Disney representative told us, “future enhancements”. The Studio Backlot Tour at Disney’s Hollywood Studio will give its final tour on Sept. 27, 2014. - See more at: http://attractionsmagazine.com/studio-backlot-tour-attraction-closing-later-month-disneys-hollywood-studios/#sthash.2tdLCcgj.dpuf

And ....
The Maelstrom ride at Epcot's World Showcase Norway Pavilion will be replaced by a new attraction based on "Frozen".

Some folks are not happy with this.

Two things:
I hope it's better Imagineered than the 'Under the Sea Journey of the Little Mermaid'  over in Fantasyland.

I wonder if the movie at the end of the ride will remain. (probably not)

The movies at Norway, China, France, and Canada are some of favorite Epcot things. And yes, I do wish that ALL of the countries would have one.

So many changes!!

Save Off Kilter !!

The WDW Powers-That-Make-Decisions recently released this message:
Over the coming months, we’ll be introducing new entertainment acts at Epcot, refreshing some of our existing acts and retiring a few others.
Namely: Off Kilter (Canada),  Mo'Rockin (Morocco),  The World Showcase Players (United Kingdom),  Spirit of America Fife and Drum Corps
.... their final performances the week ending September 27. We thank them for all they’ve done to make the Epcot Guest experience enjoyable and memorable.
The Disney Parks Blog announced their replacements:

B'net Houariyat, a traditional Berber music and dance troupe in Morocco;  Sbandieratori Flags, a corps of dynamic flag-waving performers in Italy; a 'thrilling' lumberjack-inspired show in Canada; Scottish Musical trio, a Celtic folk music ensemble at the United Kingdom .... more.

Whoa whoa whoa ...  Wait a minute....
Off Kilter is a very very popular act. Very. Popular.
They are just about the only reason I go to Epcot in the afternoon. Sorry, Disney-Powers-That-Make Stupid Decisions, I just don't think that a lumber-jack inspired show will ever replace Off Kilter, no matter how 'thrilling' it might be.

There's a grassroots campaign going on Facebook to save Off Kilter.   The Facebook page is called "Save Off Kilter"

The petition can be found here:

15 Years of Off Kilter Music

Off Kilter   has been playing its rockin'-out bagpipe Celtic rock at Epcot's Canada Pavilion in the World Showcase for 15 years today.

Congrats and Thanks, Jamie, Mark, Randy, Tony, and Scotty!

If you haven't heard these guys yet, you really are missing out.

More here:  Off Kilter

Note from the Disney parks Blog: "If you’re lucky enough to hear Off Kilter play “Farewell to Nova Scotia,” don’t be surprised if it suddenly sounds a whole lot like “Mickey Mouse Club March.” "

 Kickin' it!
Photo: Allears.net

So, what DO they wear under the kilts, hmmm?

JAMIE (laughing): We get that question a lot and we have a couple different answers. I like to say we wear white socks and Doc Marten boots under our kilts. But, of course, the real answer is bike shorts.      (H/T: Allears.net)

Eat to the Beatles

Epcot's Food and Wine Festival is one of my most favorite things at WDW and the Eat to the Beat concerts are part of that.

There are some that I enjoy more than others (Richard Marx!),

some that I miss (The Ventures),

and some that have never been, but would absolutely love to see (The Everly Brothers, Huey Lewis and the News).

Have you heard the rumor that the  sons of the Fab Four  might form a band? Can you imagine the crowds that THEY would draw? Of course, they would more than likely play the Amway Center before America Gardens Theater, but wouldn't it be great if they would come over and sing some of their dads' songs?

Bye, Bye Kim Possible

The 'Kim Possible World Showcase Adventure' at Epcot will be closing this summer to make way for Agent P (aka Perry the Platypus) and Dr.Doofenshmirtz, characters from the Disney Channel series "Phineas and Ferb".

The new interactive experience will be 'Phineas & Ferb: Agent P's World Showcase Adventure'.

Epcot guests will become secret agents using clues provided by a 'high tech device' and travel throughout the World Showcase (Mexico, France, Germany, Norway, Japan, China and The UK) to help Agent P thwart the evil Doctor.

Bye, Bye British Invasion

Bazillions of Brazilians

The 'official' Disney seasons are: Holiday, Peak, Summer, Value, and Regular.   There is however one other season that WDW regulars know all about - Brazilian. This occurs in January when it's summertime below the equator and lots (I mean BAZILLIONS) of Brazilians flock to the Mouse House in well, flocks.

Why is this of interest?
Because columnist Monica Bergamo from Folha, one of the two biggest newspapers in São Paulo, reported:
“Brazil got a seat in a great international “forum”: Disney. Representatives from the greatest theme park complex in the world approached the federal government this week to announce they’ll include a Brazilian pavilion at Epcot Center, in Orlando (USA). The country will be featured alongside nations such as the US, China, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico and Canada."

Wow! Finally a new country in Epcot's World Showcase. Well, maybe. Disney has not confirmed this, so it's not yet official.

The choice of new country is not real surprising. South America is not yet represented around the World Showcase Lagoon. And remember those bazillions of Brazilians?

Frankly, if a Brazilian pavilion would include a steakhouse like Texas de Brazil , GREAT!  It would save me trip down International Drive!

Food & Wine 2010 Review

My son and his bride planned their trip to visit us (and Mickey) during the Food & Wine Festival this year.

I picked up a couple of "Passports" and we stopped at all of the kiosks to get the stamps, plus the Festival center to get the final one.

Although we didn't sample everything, here is our review of those we did:

On a scale of YUMMY to YUCKY

YUMMY:

*** The waffles (Belgium) - Unanimous approval
*** Braised short ribs (France) - seconds-worthy
*** Cherry Colada (Puerto Rico) - OLE!!
*** Chicken Chipotle Sausage (Canada) - even hard-to please hubby liked this
*** Vidal Icewine (Canada) - better than last year; hubby liked this, too

** Creme Brulee au Chocolat (France)
** Pecan Bread Pudding (Hops & Barley)
*note: the 1st one was quite good, the 2nd one was slightly less so & had only one pecan
** Rosemount Traminer Riesling (Australia)
** Ginger Ice Cream (China)
** Chocolate Lava Cake with Baileys Irish Cream Ganache (Ireland)
** Bunratty Meade Honey Wine (Ireland)

* Godiva Iced chocolate (Belgium) - might've liked it better if the ice had been crushed

* Spanish Almond Cake (Spain) - pound cake with almonds, but tasty
* Bohae Bokbunjajoo/blackberry rice wine (South Korea) - too strong for me, but the Boy liked it

SO-SO:

* Esquites (Mexico)- eh
* Churro (Mexico) - not crispy, almost on the yuck list
* Wafu Ribettes (Japan) - eh
* Pork Pot Stickers (China) - not hot, not as good as last year
* Kinjiang BBQ Chicken Stick (China)- eh
* Green Tea Plum Wine Cooler (China) - not as good as last year
* Lettuce wraps with pork & kimchi sauce (South Korea)

YUCKY:

- BBQ short rib (South Korea) - even tho the sauce was tasty, overall very disappointing
- Heirloom Tomatoes (US) - didn't even finish this
- Bison Chili (US) - unanimous vote for the yuck-o-meter
- Cheese Fondue (Charcuterie & Cheese) - bleech

We got the gift cards on the wrist bands this year and I have to say that they were a unanimous hit! We'll definitely use them next year (for which we're already saving $$$$).

Food and Wine 2010

The Marketplace list has been released.

What!!
No Boboti ?!?  No Durban Spiced Chicken (South Africa) ?!?
No Frozen Baileys (Ireland) ??

But wait.
The Godiva Iced Chocolate Coffee (Belgium) does sound good!
Ireland will offer a warm chocolate lava cake with Baileys Irish Cream Ganache.

And as long as the Green Tea Plum Wine Cooler (China) and the Pecan Bread Pudding (Hops & Barley) are as delicious as they were last year, I'll be happeee!!

Captain EO Returns

On July 2nd, Captain EO, the 17-minute 3-D space-fantasy film featuring Michael Jackson (and directed by Francis Ford Coppolla), is returning to WDW after 17 years.

It will replace "Honey I Shrunk the Audience" at the theatre in the Journey Into Imagination building (EPCOT).

Chow, Baby!

Disney Dining is changing over at Epcot's World Showcase.

Cantina de San Angel (the outdoor fast food place) at the Mexico pavilion in Epcot is closed for a significant refurbishment and expansion - a 400-seat waterside restaurant and quick service food location.

And over at the Italy pavilion, a new, unnamed as yet, 14,000 sq.ft.,  300-seat family-style pizzeria, featuring wood-burning ovens, and genuine Italian dishes, will expand the piazza by 10,000 sq ft.

Both places are expected to open in fall 2010.

Dancin' in the Park

We were at the EPCOT/World Showcase this weekend and I always check out the model train at the Germany pavilion when we're there.

There is a pavilion in the village. And in the pavilion there is a dancing couple. Either they fell over (probably) or ... maybe the CMs were having some fun because I do suspect they move things around during non-open hours..

P.S.  Mickey has been A.W.O.L. from the castle for quite some time. Please come back, Mickey!

Food & Wine in '09

I'm laughing because as I was typing the title, I kept hitting $ instead of & ... and as anyone who has been to Epcot's Food and Wine Festival knows, $ might be more appropriate!

Anyhooo ...

The 2009 Food and Wine (
September 25th - November 8th) Food Kiosk list has been released ... see it HERE

There have been a few changes:

No Durban Spiced Chicken skewers at the South Africa kiosk;
(guess I'll have to go to Boma's )

No Frozen Bailey's at Ireland's booth.
(there's an $8 saving)

OH. Waitaminnit.

South Africa is offering something new:
South seared beef tenderloin with sweet potato puree and mango barbecue sauce.

And there are new kiosks from Thailand and Rio de Janerio.

So much for saving any $$.

Confession # 10: I Miss Food Rocks

Food Rocks (previously known as the Kitchen Kabaret) closed in January, 2004, to make room for Soarin'.

We never missed this 12-minute, er, concert when we were at Epcot. And if the Boy was with us, we might see it twice.

And I should mention two things: 1) the Boy was much older than you might think, and 2) this was the only animatronic attraction that Hubby never slept through.

Although Soarin' is absolutely worth the wait in line, I DO miss those hokey little characters singing those familiar, yet different, tunes:

Füd Wrapper (the host),

The Utensils - a collection of kitchen gadgets based on the band Queen ("Give Us Junk"),

The Refrigerator Police
("Every Egg You Break"),

the
Peach Boys ("Good Nutrition"),

Pita Gabriel ("High Fiber"),

Chubby Cheddar
("Let's Exercise"),

Neil Moussaka ("Vegetables Are Good For You"),

T
he Sole of Rock 'n' Roll, a fish that strongly resembles the singer Cher,

a piano-playing "Little Richard" pineapple ("Tutti Frutti"),

and The Get-To-The-Point Sisters (a new version of "Respect"
)

Maybe these guys could be relocated, like over in the Wonders of Life building?
